One of the great pleasures of living in New York’s Lower Hudson Valley is our extraordinary access to nature and the outdoors. The Appalachian Mountains run through our region, offering some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Northeast and a remarkable opportunity to explore one of America's greatest public treasures. Stretching more than 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine, the Appalachian Trail (AT) is a wonder to explore, whether for an afternoon walk or a multi-day trek.

My own love of hiking and the outdoors began at a young age, exploring the trails, lakes, and mountains of Harriman State Park. Tuxedo is fortunate to be one of the communities through which the AT passes, connecting our corner of the Hudson Valley to this extraordinary wilderness corridor.

That lifelong interest recently took me to the AT near the Delaware Water Gap, where one of my best friends and I continued our annual tradition of an overnight hike. The fresh air and scenic views of sunset and sunrise were superb. Racoon Ridge on the trail, at about 1,300 ft, offers clear views north to the Catskill Mountains in NY! Seeing 3 states, NY, NJ and PA from one vantage point is quite special, and the scenic Delaware River below is breathtaking.

It's always a welcomed opportunity to get outdoors, enjoy the scenery, and reconnect with the natural beauty that makes this part of the country so special. I've included a photo from our adventure below.
