One of the great things about living in or near Tuxedo Park, NY, is the easy access to nature. Beyond Tuxedo Park's historic luxury homes and small-town charm, the area is surrounded by some of New York’s most beautiful state parks. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a weekend hiker, or just looking for a peaceful spot to spend an afternoon, these parks offer something for everyone. Let’s explore three incredible state parks near Tuxedo Park, each with its own story, unique features, and fun activities you won’t want to miss.
Harriman State Park
Just East of Tuxedo Park, you’ll find Harriman State Park, New York’s second-largest state park. Established in 1910 after a generous donation of land and funds from the Harriman family, this sprawling park covers nearly 47,500 acres. It’s home to more than 200 miles of hiking trails, 31 lakes, and countless streams, making it a year-round favorite for locals and visitors alike. Fun fact: a portion of the famous Appalachian Trail runs directly through Harriman, bringing hikers from all over the country.
Two activities to try:
- Hike the Appalachian Trail: Experience one of America’s most iconic trails as it winds through Harriman’s ridges and valleys.
- Boating or fishing at Lake Sebago: A scenic spot to enjoy a quiet day on the water, with rentals available seasonally.

Sterling Forest State Park
Only minutes from Tuxedo Park on it's Westerly flank, Sterling Forest State Park spans over 22,000 acres of preserved woodlands. This park is unique because it was nearly developed in the 1990s, but thanks to local advocacy and conservation groups, it was saved and protected as public land. Today, it stands as one of the Hudson Valley’s biggest conservation victories. Sterling Forest is also a critical habitat for wildlife, including the American bald eagle, and contains historic iron mines that date back centuries.
Two activities to try:
- Hike to the Fire Tower: A moderate hike that rewards you with panoramic views of the Hudson Highlands and surrounding forests.
- Birdwatching at Sterling Lake: Spot bald eagles, ospreys, and other native species while enjoying the peaceful lakeside setting.

Schunnemunk State Park
A little farther northeast sits Schunnemunk State Park, covering more than 3,300 acres and centered on Schunnemunk Mountain, the highest peak in Orange County at 1,664 feet. Known for its striking pink and gray conglomerate rock and rugged ridgelines, this park offers a more remote, backcountry feel compared to the busier Harriman or Sterling Forest. The views from the top are some of the best in the Hudson Valley, stretching for miles on a clear day.
Two activities to try:
- Ridge hiking on the Long Path: A challenging but rewarding trail with dramatic views of the Hudson River Valley.
- Wildflower walks in spring: Schunnemunk’s meadows bloom with colorful wildflowers and rare plant species, making it a photographer’s dream.
