Perkins Memorial Drive at Bear Mountain State Park

Perched high above the Hudson River Valley, Perkins Memorial Drive rewards visitors with sweeping views of the Bear Mountain Bridge, Westchester, Putnam, and Orange County. The drive itself is a delight, winding through colorful hillsides. At the summit, stop at the Perkins Memorial Tower for 360-degree views of the Hudson Valley in peak foliage.   Perkins was one of the first commissioners of the Palisades Interstate Parks Commission - an important body that oversees many open and protected spaces in the region.

On your way up, the Trailside Museum & Zoo at Bear Mountain, is a great family stop, offering a closer look at the region’s native wildlife and history.

Trophy Point at West Point Military Academy

Few overlooks rival the grandeur of Trophy Point at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Standing on this historic site, you’ll gaze north up the Hudson River framed by rolling, tree-covered mountains glowing with autumn color. It’s a place where history and natural beauty meet, making it a must-visit during foliage season.   Nearby you can have a chance to visit the lovely walking downdowns of Cornwall, NY and Cornwall-on-Hudson to grab a bite to eat.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve – New Paltz, NY

For those who love hiking, and a more off the beaten path immersion to parks, Minnewaska State Park near New Paltz is a foliage paradise. With trails leading to dramatic cliffs, serene lakes, and panoramic overlooks, this park offers some of the most spectacular fall scenery in the state. The mix of hardwood forests and mountain vistas guarantees an unforgettable experience for leaf-peepers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Harriman State Park | 7 Lakes Drive  Drive & The Appalachian Trail

Bordering Tuxedo Park, and many other area communities, Harriman State Park is a local favorite for fall adventures. A leisurely drive along Seven Lakes Drive reveals reflective waters surrounded by fiery autumn colors. For hikers, the Appalachian Trail section beginning at Elks Pen (in South Fields Tuxedo) is a rewarding way to immerse yourself in the foliage on foot and get some intensive exercise  It’s a steep uphill climb from Elks Pen, be prepared with water, good hiking gear and be prepared to be amazed at the views.

Hawks Nest – Port Jervis, NY

If you’re looking for a picture-perfect drive, perhaps in your top-down sports car, Hawks Nest along Route 97 in Port Jervis is iconic. The roadway hugs the mountainside above the Delaware River, offering dramatic views of both the water and the brilliant fall foliage that surrounds it. It’s a favorite spot for photographers and anyone who enjoys a classic Hudson Valley drive.  Keep an eye out for Bald Eagles and make time for a lunch or dinner either in Port Jervis or in a nearby town in the foothills of the Western Catskills.  So much to do here!

Bellvale – Warwick, NY

For a more relaxed outing, the high ridges of Bellvale near Warwick and Greenwood Lake, NY provide sweeping views of the valley below. This spot is especially beautiful in fall when the Warwick Valley comes alive with color.  This vista looks West, so the views for sunset are some of the best in the region.  Be sure to visit Bellvale Farms Creamery to cap off your scenic day. The creamery is nationally recognised for its ice cream. Enjoy a cone while overlooking the rolling hills of Warwick Valley, glowing with autumn brilliance. It’s the perfect blend of sweet treats and natural beauty.
